Summary on Grant Application Form |
Following successful EPSRC funded work to identify VLF radio waves originating from power system faults - sferics - this project will further the understanding of this phenomenon and develop a system for locating the sferic origination. The project is in collaboration with Midlands Electricity (MEB) and will commence by commissioning two further VLF recording systems at sites in the MEB region. This will bring the total number of recording sites to four. Each recording site has a VLF aerial, digital signal processing system for identifying and recording sferics, and GPS timing to allow synchronised sampling of the signals. The programme will develop an improved fault sferic detection algorithm with better sensitivity, and better resilience to lightning sferics, compared to the existing algorithm. Developments will be made on a cross correlation technique that will allow the time of arrival of the sferic at the different recording sites to calculated; this will then allow the fault location to be evaluated using hyperbolic navigation theory. The programme will include monitoring periods of several months to allow the operational limits of the locating system to be established.
