Summary on Grant Application Form
In previous work in this lab, a supramolecular cube has been self-assembled in essentially quantitative yields. This structure incorporates EIGHT Ru (II) CORNERS and TWELVE bipyridyl EDGES . The 1-step assembly of other HOMO_METALLIC BOXES will be investigated. HETERO-METALLIC BOXES will be self-assembled using a two-step protocol. Boxes will be assembled using a COMBINATION of non-covalent interactions. Corners will be assembled using metal coordination. While edges will be fused together using HYDROGEN BONDING or a different set of coordination interactions. The HOST-GUEST chemistry of the boxes will be investigated. Potentially, they have AT LEAST tow different RECOGNITION MODES. ELECTROCHEMICAL studies on the previously synthesised cube clearly demonstrate that the Ru (II) corners Do interact with each other. Using a variety of techniques, this interaction will be further investigated. Hence, the use of the boxes as possible TUNABLE MOLECULAR SENSORS, or MULTISTATE MOLECULAR SWITCHES will be assessed.
