Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed project comprises the final development and testing of MR compatible endoscopes. These devices are being developed for use in our GE (Interventional Magnetic Resonance (iMR) scanner for the purpose of image guided surgery. Prototype versions of the endoscopes have been developed in our laboratory. The project is in three phases: testing and endoscope within MR phantoms in order to study specific field distortion; the development of surgical/imaging procedures for minimal access surgery (including the evaluation of tracking the endoscope in three dimensions); the testing of software techniques, based on fuzzy segmentation, which enable automatic segmentation of the 3D MR image in real-time. The work will be carried out by Professor Halls on the iMR scaller at St Mary's Hospital. This is a completely new type of MR scaller which we jointly own with St Mary's; it is, at present, the only one in the United Kingdom.
