Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will enhance and further develop a computer model for the prediction of graded sediment behaviour in gravel river channels. The enhancement will involve comparisons of numerical simulations with measured data from the field and physical models including non-equilibrium conditions. This will enable improvements to be made in the mathematical conceptualisation and numerical algorithms for two of the most significant physical processes; size fraction mobility and active layer thickness. It will utilise sediment transport data collected during the EPSRC Flood Channels Programme, Series C and therefore involves the transfer of laboratory results to practical application, as requested in the CEWEM call for proposals. The apparent sophistication of computer models often gives unjustified confidence that the predictions made are accurate. It is therefore also proposed that, in addition, to the model development the project will undertake a critical review of the performance of computer models of graded sediment transport. This review will attempt to place error bounds on model predictions, and benefit those responsible for making engineering decisions based on model output.
