Summary on Grant Application Form |
The structures of many important inorganic solids are characterised by their local and bulk structures. Full structure analysis of these materials therefore requires determination of both these features. We have developed a program that allows simultaneous fitting of EXAFS and powder diffraction data providing a powerful method for analysing the structures of solids. The aim of the research will be to develop this program further to include wide applicability in terms of systems studied and data type. Important aspects of structure determination including thermal effects, distribution of scattering centres, light atom position determination and differences in local and long range symmetries will also be covered. Application to a wide range of current topics in solid state chemistry/materials including defect materials, alloys, GMR, superconductivity, zeolites (absorption/ion exchange types) and intercalates will benefit a large user community.
