Summary on Grant Application Form
Increased containerisation over recent years has resulted in dredging of deeper navigation channels in commercial ports and associated estuaries throughout the World. Dredging can affect both the site of removal and site where material is dumped. Key questions concerning the fate of suspended silt for the evaluation of flood defence, water quality, and conservation management issues include; (1) how is the benthic community affected, and how quickly can it recover; and (2) how rapidly does silt deposit and re-consolidate to form a new intertidal surface? The overall aims of this proposal are to answer these questions, with particular emphasis placed on identifying the key processes involved in silt deposition and consolidation, and determining the role of the benthic community in this. A combination of field and experimental measures of hydrodynamic, sedimentological, and biological parameters will be carried out. The role of the biological community will be incorporated into a silt transport model, which will be validated against a second estuary. The findings will be made available to the relevant beneficiaries concerned with estuarine management.
