Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent research into the phenomenon of magneto-resistance has been intense; this has been driven by the discovery of materials exhibiting 'giant' and lately 'colossal' magneto-resistance (GMR and CMR respectively), and the industrial applications (e.g. magnetic storage) that these effects have lent themselves to. This sudden renewal of interest in magneto-resistance lies in the large changes of resistance that these materials exhibit in only relatively small magnetic fields. Technical applications (such as magnetic sensors) would demand a 50% magneto-resistance ratio (MR) in fields of about 0.01T at room temperature. CMR materials still have some way to go (the current figures are 5% MR in 0.18T at 247K), but all indications, based on recent rapid improvements, suggest that CMR may soon herald the magnetic revolution of the next century. This proposal is aimed at attacking the problem of the origin of CMR through a series of calculations and experiments, using well established theoretical and experimental techniques to probe the electronic structure.
