Recession of soft coastal cliffs presents a significant risk to land use and development. Large sums have been invested in erosion control schemes in an attempt to resist the loss of cliff top properties, services and infrastructure. The proposed research is focused on development of a probabilistic simulation model of cliff recession which will provide predictions of cliff recession at unprotected and protected cliff sites for use in risk assessment, scheme appraisal, design and cliff management. The potential of this type of model has been demonstrated in recent MAFF-funded research. It is now proposed to implement new and more realistic modules for beach processes, basal erosion and slope stability and verify the model against field data for the receding Naze cliffs in Essex. Physical model studies will be used to develop a new formula for basal erosion and to test the simulation model under laboratory conditions. The cliff recession model will be used to demonstrate the impact on neighbouring coasts and estuaries of sediments supplied by cliff erosion. This approach will be linked with longer-term geomorphological process-response models to provide a framework for evaluating the impact of cliff protection schemes on other landforms within the coastal cell.
