|
Total and partial exclusion barrages have become a popular strategy for the development and redevelopment of estuarine areas (eg the Tees barrage). However, because these structures create an impounded body of water they provide ideal conditions for the trapping of sediments. As a consequence of these conditions such structures compromise the reasons for their existence, eg the amenity value of the impounded area diminishes as water depth lessens. This project will establish present and long-term sediment budgets for barrages and develop an understanding of sediment behaviour within the impoundments. High rates of sediment deposition are associated with high organic and pollutant loads occurring within the impounded area, with concomitant loss in water quality. If these structures are to remain effective and their long-term viability, utility and function is to be ensured then the behaviour of sediments within these impoundments and the consequences of sedimentation will need to be understood and predicted. Based on the understanding gained in this project, sustainable management strategies for barrages will be provided.
