Summary on Grant Application Form |
We have shown that heating oxo-centred trinuclear chromium carboxylates leads to higher nuclearity cages. The cages which result depend on the temperature and on the carboxylate, with octanuclear wheels found at 200 degrees and octa- and dodeca-nuclear cages at 400 degrees C. we wish to see how general this result is, as initial results indicate that oxo-centred trinulcear iron carboxylates form similar products. The approach is high-yielding, and is an unusual way of making high nuclearity cages. Several aspects of the synthesis will be examined: which carboxylates can be used; how many of the 3d-metals will support such treatment; can microwaves be used for heating; can larger precursors than oxo-centred triangles be used. The intention is that several series of isostructural cages will be made, varying the metals present and their magnetic and spectroscopic properties studies. This will allow correlation of property with electronic configuration, without needing to make allowances for change of structure of nuclearity.
