Summary on Grant Application Form
The concept of group decision support (GDS) is concerned with supporting multidisciplinary groups faced with complex decisions. Previous EPSRC-funded research has established the potential of several GDS methodologies in improving the effectiveness of decision-making on the 'soft' interface between construction projects and the wider business environment. The adoption of the principles of GDS would embrace the established best practices of both risk and value management, thereby providing a significant step forward in the provision of value for money for construction clients. The proposed research will evaluate the application of an integrated approach to GDS at the decision pinch-points which punctuate the project process. Insights into current practice will initially be obtained through a series of semi-structured interviews with practitioners throughout the construction supply chain. An action-research methodology will then be adopted to evaluate six facilitated GDS workshops on a range of projects at different stages of the construction supply chain. Follow-up interviews will be conducted to evaluate the extent to which the workshops contributed to the effectiveness of each project. All six case studies will be fully documented with reference to the broader organisational context and mapped in accordance with the established generic design and construction process protocol.
