|
The programme aims to capitalise on a method which has been found to introduce functional groups into polypropylene which is novel and has been shown to be effective for a number of end uses such as fibres, adhesives and coating purposes. The aim feasibility study aims to establish whether the same chemistry can be used to enhance the performance of polypropylene for packaging purposes. The specific aims are to establish whether the modified polymers can be processed to form films or injection moulded to produce closures which have better properties than unmodified polypropylene products. The specific properties of interest are printability, intrinsic adhesion to other polymers and the ability to accept adhesives. It is known that the funtionalised polypropylenes blend well with other polar polymers. An exploration of the blending capability of the modified polypropylene with poly (ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) will be carried out and the film forming and injection moulding capabilities of the materials examined. The fundamental studies will involve an exploration of the molecular-processing-properties relationships of the materials and these will be correlated with the industry standard tests for film and injection moulded products currently used by the
