Summary on Grant Application Form |
A joint three year project is proposed between the Universities of Liverpool, Sheffield and Teesside. The project will investigate methods for strengthening masonry parapets to ensure they are able to satisfy the dual requirements of containing vehicles and remaining intact following a vehicle impact. Both the rehabilitation of existing parapets and the design of new impact resistant walls will be considered. The potential use of new compostite reinforcements will be assessed due to their advantages of light weight and high durability. The work will comprise linked experimental and numerical modelling studies. The experimental programme will include impact tests on full-size walls to investigate the effectiveness of various strengthening techniques. Small specimen tests will be performed to assess the rate-dependency of the unit-mortar bond, and to characterise the reinforcing materials used. In parallel with this work simplified numerical models of the wall behaviour will be developed so that these are capable of modelling the presence of reinforcement. Additionally finite element modelling will be used to model the small and large-scale test specimens, and to assist in the development of efficient strengthening techniques. During the project there will be close liaison with industrial collaborators.
