The research will investigate new issues involved in parallel functional programming for (heterogeneous) networks of workstations using the widely available GUM/GranSim system, which is built on a state-of-the-art sequential system, the Glasgow Haskell compiler. It will integrate ideas taken from Clack's previous work on the DIGRESS distributed memory graph reducer into this system.The work will proceed in three phases:1. Initial Study: a thorough assessment of (I) design differences between DIGRESS and GUM, (ii) potential for integrating the best concepts from DIGRESS into GUM, and (iii) the potential benefits to realistic parallel programs.2. Implement and Test: promising modifications from phase 1 will be implemented. Where appropriate they will first be simulated and tested using GranSim before being implemented in GUM. The criterion for success for each modification will be tested using the GUM/Gransim profiling tool.3. Investigation: new techniques for improving runtime memory and task management (such as graph-shipping between processors and garbage collection) will be investigated with respect to local virtual memory and cache performance.
