Summary on Grant Application Form |
Traditionally, analyses of the acoustics of fibrous media have been based on the assumption of a rigid solid frame, but attention has more recently been devoted to the effects of frame vibration. Several idealised empirical models for frame motion have been reported, but these have not included prediction of the dynamic structural properties from first principles and have not incorporated frictional effects. A much more fundamental theoretical formulation of the effects of structural motion in fibrous and other porous media would permit quantitative material selection and the design of fibrous materials for particular applications. The proposed research will develop structural models, which will be incorporated in a vibroacoustic formulation. The structural models will be based on an assemblage of basic modules, each of which will embody the important features of the mechanical behaviour of real materials. Frictional effects will also be included and randomisation of the overall model is proposed. The structural models will be verified by careful experimental tests, both on macro-scale structures and on actual (micro-scale) materials. Coupled fluid and structural wave motion in the materials will be studied, both theoretically and experimentally. The results will be usable in predictive design schemes for fibrous media.
