Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research has three main interdependent components and seeks to build on the conspicuous success of recent research pioneered in Oxford and involving hydrides of the Main Group metals. + Synthetic studies will be directed towards the goals of new tractable molecular derivatives of the elements of Group 13 bonded to substituents like H,BH4 or NCO providing good leaving groups and/or incorporating frameworks likely to act as useful templates for the formation of extended lattices of binary compounds. These will typically entail metathesis, addition or elimination reactions starting from halide, organo or low-valent derivatives of the Main Group element.+ The chemistry of the compounds will be explored, with particular reference to their decomposition, aggregation, complexation, and potential as synthetic reagents.+ Detailed physical characterisation of selected derivatives will embrace a wide range of appropriate techniques, viz. Matric isolation; vibrational and NMR spectroscopies; electron, X-ray and neutron diffraction; and quantum chemical calculations. These studies will be designed to resolve problems of structure, bonding and mechanism.
