Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal seeks to systematically investigate theoretically and experimentally the control of spectra in fibre-Bragg gratings via the fabrication of patterns of phase defects. This is to be achieved both through theoretical modelling and the experimental assessment of several prototype structures, the latter being produced via collaboration with an established group in fibre grating fabrication (Aston). We believe that intra-gap spectral control will open up a number of possibilities of direct relevance to both the sensor and communications communities, such as through improvements in sensor sensitivity and enhanced information density for WDM.
