Summary on Grant Application Form
There are many tasks in which individuals apply expertise to visual data, such as medical diagnosis or the use of geographic information systems. A characteristic of these is that decisions often require the combination of information from more than one source. This proposal considers the factors which influence a human's ability to carry out these tasks and the design options in equipment and training which optimise these factors. The project will carry out experiments with theoretical and applied objectives. The theoretical objective is to explore the relationship between memory and decision making with visual data. These experiments will investigate the consequences for memory of combining information in different formats and of revising decisions in the light of new data. The applied objective is to evaluate the impact of different design options in visual information systems upon performance. This research will be of direct benefit to designers of visual information systems and will contribute to theories of decision making.
