Summary on Grant Application Form |
We shall synthesise well defined perfluorinated resorcarenes/pyrogallenes which will be evaluated empirically for their properties in making the surface of textiles oleo- and hydro-phobic.The structural features required for these properties will be probed by varying the pendant chains which will form the surface of the treated material, and an iterative cycle of design, synthesis and testing set up to optimise the molecular structure of the treatment material. The compounds will be further modified to allow the best of these compounds to be fixed in robust, polymeric surfaces by irradiation or through covalent attachment to the cellulose surface, again following the same cycle. The attachment of these treatments to the surface will be explored through MALDI-TOF spectrometry to probe the effects of the in situ processing of the treatment on the material and new surfaces.
