Summary on Grant Application Form |
New variants of nanocomposite, ultra-soft magnetic ferrous alloys, with additions of aluminium and having improved d.c. and a.c. magnetic properties compared with the corresponding Al-free, Finemet composition, have been developed by the applicants. The aims now are to optimise further the magnetic properties of these alloys by adjustments to the metalloid and Al concentrations for applications in toroidal strip-wound cores and powder cores for various devices including dc-dc converters and planar magnetic E cores. Particular emphasis will be given to studying the insulation, pulverising to powder, bonding and core pressing of the initial ribbon cast material having optimised magnetic properties and to characterising the influence of the processing parameters in the magnetic properties of the powder cores, notably at high frequencies in excess of 100 kHz. These new alloys are expected to have improved cost effectiveness and/or improved performance depending on the application. The role of Al in enhancing the properties of the exchange coupled nanocomposite alloys will be evaluated.
