Welding is a very attractive alternative to mechanical fastening for joining high strength aluminium alloys for aerospace applications as it offers considerable cost savings, increased manufacturing speed, and weight savings. However, amongst other problems, welds show different corrosion behaviour to the parent metal. It is proposed to determine the origins of this susceptibility by investigating how the microstructure of the weld and the adjacent heat-affected zone affect local corrosion reactions, particularly at intermetallic particles. Approaches will then be sought to minimise corrosion by modifying welding practices, developing post-weld surface laser treatments, and assessing the feasibility of chemical treatments such as the formation of conversion coatings and anodized layers. The research will be carried out in collaboration with British Aerospace (BAe) and DERA. BAe will supply the welds, and contribute time on two key pieces of equipment, the scanning reference electrode technique and laser surface modification equipment.DERA will carry out corrosion testing, including standard salt spray and stress corrosion cracking measurements.
