Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will build upon previous research to develop a comprehensive validated model of the interactive wear and lubrication of piston rings and cylinder walls.Mathematical modelling will focus on the primary considerations of piston ring and cylinder wall profile wear and its effects of performance, changes in surface roughness with time and the analysis of components with complex surface features. Secondary efforts will be devoted to the interesting, but more investigate and speculative, areas of piston/piston ring interaction and piston ring rotation.Great emphasis will be placed on validating the enhanced model using existing fired engine test data and additional tests undertaken as part of this research.Experimental work will be divided into bench rig tests and fired engine tests. The former is needed to evaluate friction and wear behaviour in the boundary lubrication regime and will be undertaken on an existing Cameron Plint TE77 tribology rig. Engine tests will be carried out on an existing Ricardo Hydra gasoline engine to provide realistic validation data for the model.
