The lens of the human eye changes its external shape to allow the eye to focus over a range of distances. This focusing ability is universally lost with age. The other major age-related impairment to vision arising in the lens is cataract. Cataractous lenses are replaced by implants but these do not have focussing ability. In order to develop a fully functional implant lens, information is required about how the internal structure and optics of the oens alter with shape change. The pertinent optical parameter which needs to be measured is the refractive index gradient (the refractive index varies within the lens). This project aims to measure how the refractive index gradient of the eye lens alters with shape change in order to provide vital information for the development of a fully functional implant lens. Such an implant would be beneficial not only to patients undergoing cataract surgery but also for individuals who may wish to have their focusing ability restored.
