The only routinely available sources of far, infrared (FIR) radiation are very large inconvenient gas lasers requiring high power, line narrowed and tuned carbon dioxide pump lasers. Alternatively a few free electron laser facilities are available. Some current attempts to provide better sources (e.g. the p-Ge laser) still require liquid helium and high magnetic fields. The lack of convenient coherent sources has severely inhibited use of the FIR, where thermal background dominates and low noise equivalent detectors need helium cooling. Whilst a diode laser would be ideal, this is very difficult in the FIR because of free carrier induced loss in carrier injection and extraction regions. We will develop a convenient, compact optically pumped MQW laser. This will operate at a freely chosen FIR wavelength (unlike gas lasers) with narrow tunability. The initial pump will be a carbon dioxide laser, but the pump laser requirements are very much simpler than those of gas lasers. Initially we will operate at low temperature, but our objective is thermoelectrically cooled, CW or high duty cycle operation, across much of the FIR spectrum. In the longer term a quantum cascade laser pump may be feasible, providing a solid state, electrically excited source.
