Summary on Grant Application Form |
Exploitation of the commercially and scientifically terahertz (THz) region of the electromagnetic spectrum has been severely limited by the absence of cheap, reliable solid state sources. We seek pump-priming funding to demonstrate enhanced room temperature THz generation by difference frequency mixing of visible photons in non-linear optical materials fabricated using our unique molecular beam growth facility. Requisite phase matching will be realised in a novel, hitherto untried, manner by photonic engineering of the non-linear crystals using in situ focused ion beam and regrowth patterning. This will greatly increase the output THz power with widescale applications of rich technological benefit.
