Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is for an applications-driven research programme into a novel class of infra-red emitters based on intersubband transitions, utilising a quantum cascade (QC) configuration, in the wide-gap III-V system InGaAs-InAlAs. We have recently demonstrated QC lasers at 5.2 and 4.6 um in this material system. We shall combine our expertise in high precision MBE growth and semiconductor laser design and fabrication with work on photonic microstructures to improve and adapt quantum cascade laser technology for sensor applications. Objectives include room temperature operation at =10.5 um of QC laser with power levels in the milliWatt range for the detection of Ethylene. High source spectral brightness an new sensor formats, such as intra-cavity absorption spectroscopes will allow us to reach the required detection limit of 100 part per billion.
