Summary on Grant Application Form |
Dental Polymer Drug Release SystemsUsing Ion beam analysis the release characteristics of a drug, chlorhexedine, from polymers induced by water (D20) ingress will be studied in terms of D20 location and concentration, polymer matrix boundaries, and drug concentration, location and release. The aim is to improve polymers currently being developed for the chlorhexedine treatment of fungal/bacterial infections.Mucosal Drug Delivery SystemUsing the same technique the water-induced release characteristics of another drug, dexamethasone, from a polymer patch will be studied. In addition the ingress profile of the drug into the mucosa will be measured through the interface with the mucosa and in the mucosa itself. The egress profile from the patch and the ingress profile into the mucosa will be correlated. The aim is to characterise a unidirectional patch/mucosal delivery system for dexamethasone, an effective treatment for lichen planus for which systemic delivery is not desirable.
