Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose the development of a novel, state-of-the-art, broadly tunable, narrow-bandwidth, all solid-state optical parametric oscillator (OPO) laser source. The devise is designed to give energies >10 mJ per pulse (idler output), with a bandwidth of ca. 150 MHz. Given the initial diode set specified in this proposal, the idler and signal outputs from the OPO plus the sum frequencies generated by combining these outputs with the first and second harmonies from the seeded Nd-YAG pump laser will allow us to cover more than half of the entire 250-1000 nm wavelength range at this sort of resolution and with >mJ pulse energies. The combination of resolution, tunability and spectral brightness provided by this instrument will enable many new, and/or greatly improved, investigations of (i) structure and bonding in free radical species via high resolution hyperfine measurements, (ii) the electronic spectroscopy of compounds involving a d-block elements via one and two colour spectroscopy, and (iii) the dynamics of molecular photodissociation processes and of state-selected bimolecular reactions via careful measurement and analysis of the recoiling products.
