Summary on Grant Application Form
An electro-oedometer will be developed as a novel testing technique for macro-fabric characterisation of a soil-water electrolyte system under changing effective stress. Within the electro-oedometer, low-frequency (<100kHz) electrical conductivity measurements will be taken both parallel and normal to the direction of loading thereby enabling a study of the development of particle anisotropy. Electrical measurements on both the bulk soil and the interstitial fluid phase expressed directly from the sample under test will be used to study fabric features such as tortuosity and anisotropy during consolidation. It is also proposed to establish relationships between electrical measurements and (a) soil diffusion coefficients, and (b) permeability anisotropy, determined from standard test procedures. Particle alignment will also be studied in an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope to validate electrical measurements.
