Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Department of Materials Science has an extensive current research portfolio supported by EPSRC, PPARC, the European Union and Industry with strong emphasis on magnetic materials and devices, superconducting materials, and basic studies of thin film diffusion and growth. In order to underpin these research areas we are seeking to greatly enhance our magnetic measurement capabilities though the purchase of a state of the art magnetometer system. This instrument will provide alternating gradient and vibrating sample magnetometer capabilities and will permit measurements both at low and high temperatures. The sensitivity and range of field sweep rates will enable far more detailed studies of static and dynamic magnetism in a wide range of materials - particularly ultra-thin films and spin valve device structures. The high temperature capability will complement existing differential scanning calorimetry and x-ray diffraction measurements and permit in-situ studies of interdiffusion in heterostructures, basic magnetic and superconducting materials studies and highly applied research in the magnetic recording and sensor areas.
