Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent scientific and technological developments in materials science have enabled the creation of devices with nanometre control of the surface chemical functionality. These developments have overtaken current analytical schemes and new instrumentation is required to exploit and develop further this advanced materials research. We propose to construct instrumentation which can map, with high lateral resolution, both three-dimensional structure and events at aqueous interfaces. The synergistic combination of three technologies; surface plasmon resonance, near-field scanning optical microscopy, and optical microscopy and trapping, will be realised. This application builds on our experience and expertise in the areas of instrument development and materials research. The instrument will be used to study new systems in polymer surface science, solid-phase chemical synthesis, and tissue engineering through biomimetic devices.
