Summary on Grant Application Form
This is a collaboration with the University of Kent.All-fibre filters have widespread applications within optical telecommunications and sensing. The null coupler acousto-optic device shows great promise as the basis for such filters, being simple, low loss and low power. However, to date its bandwidth has been compromised by diameter non-uniformity and low frequency operation. We will use our CO2 laser heat source to make the couplers instead of a flame. This should reproducibly yield couplers of well-controlled shape, including a suitable uniform waist diameter. For narrow band filtering (eg for WDM), it is also necessary to generate high frequency (-100 MHz) flexural acoustic purpose. We will then construct narrow bandwidth tunable filters from suitable null taper couplers excited by such transducers. We anticipate that complete mode coupling will occur in these devices with acoustic powers in the region of several tens of microwatts or less.
