Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will develop an electron spin and energy analysing detector for spin-polarised photoemission experiments using synchrotron radiation. The polarimeter will exploit both spin-orbit scattering asymmetry and exchange scattering asymmetry to measure the electron polarisation in three dimensions. In addition, an electron energy analysis stage based on time-of-flight (TOF) dispersion of photoelectrons will be employed to provide a sensitivity enhancement of about two orders of magnitude relative to the existing energy analysers at Daresbury which rely on electrostatic dispersion. The improved efficiency will extend the powerful technique of spin-polarised photoelectron spectroscopy (SPPES) to a much wider range of systems than can be studied at present. The detector performance will be demonstrated by flagship experiments on supported nanoscale particle assemblies and free chiral molecules.
