Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is intended to provide a dedicated instrumental development facility with the aim of obtaining structural resolution at a level beyond 1 A using HREM. It embodies a new approach to the task of extending microscope resolution and involves the modification of a standard 300 kV electron microscope by (a) the incorporation of a new objective lens pole-piece designed to minimise chromatic, rather than spherical aberration, (b) the adaptation of an existing ultra-stable goniometer stage to compu-centric capability, allowing orientation changes in the specimen to be monitored directly via the HREM image so that optimum structural information may be obtained, (c) the inclusion of a Cs corrector for the objective lens, and (d) an electron beam monochromator to reduce the energy spread in the electron beam and thus further reduce the resolution-limiting role of chromatic aberration. These objectives are not interdependent and may be pursued separately if unforeseen difficulties arise. When completed, the new microscope will be available for general studies within the fields of chemistry and materials science.
