Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research aims to integrate a number of technologies to create the world's first high field Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope/Spectrometer, with the ultimate goal of demonstrating single spin detection for electrons. The central experimental challenges are :1) The integration of a low loss mm-wave structure, that allows efficient mm-wave excitation of a sample at 90GHz and 270GHZ, with a cryogenic scanning probe microscope inside a 12 T superconducting magnet.2) The integration of a microscopic highly anisotropic magnetic probe, on the end of an ultra-soft cantilever, and the measurement of the displacement and active stabilisation of that cantilever.3) The evaluation of a number of different modulation schemes, cantilevers, sample holders and anti-vibration techniques and the investigation of methods to evacuate the system whilst allowing efficient cooling and scanning of the sample and probe.4) Demonstration of micro-imaging on a wide variety of biological, chemical and physical systems.5) Finally to offer a service to UK users through the EPSRC ESR facility.
