Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will develop a phase measuring interferometer capable of confocal operation which is sensitive to nanometer height changes within the thin slice defined by the confocal operation. The design of the system is such that the system may operate in wide field, so that there is no requirem to perform rapid scanning. By properly addressing the optical features and the encoding of the speck pattern required to ensure confocal operation, data acquisition on the microsecond timescale will be achieved. This will allow us to solve several problems in pharmaceutical technology where existing systems are too slow. The research will be carried out into crystallization kinetics of insulin crystals to study elemental surface structures, solute diffusion and formation of crystal defects. I. addition, the instrument will be applied for analysis of particle formation and micromixing processe in supercritical carbon dioxide for an inhalation drug compound. The scope and potential of the instrument in other areas will be examined.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Keywords describing areas of proposalOptics, Instrumentation, Pharmaceutics, Physical Chemistry, Protein Crystallization
