Summary on Grant Application Form |
Focused ion beam optical spectroscopy (FIBOS) is a surface analytical technique in which optical radiation resulting from ion bombardment of a material is collected and analysed to reveal information about its physical and chemical structure. We have constructed an instrument in order to investigate the technique. To date, luminescence and spectral line information in the range 250-800nm has been acquired from metals, insulators, semiconductors, geological materials and ceramics, but we wish to extend the spectral range of analysis, allowing detection and mapping of a greater range of elements in the periodic table, as well as luminescence centres in rare-earth doped materials such as optical fibres and flat panel displays. The specific objectives of the proposed project are:i) To develop an advanced spectrometer sensitive to radiation from the vacuum ultraviolet to the infrared and to fit it to an existing focused gallium ion gun system.ii) To develop an understanding of the physics of the microplasma generated in order to obtain quantitative analysis.iii) To apply the technique to the analysis of steels, semiconductors dopants, rare-earth doped optical fibres, flat panel displays, geological materials and composite materials.
