Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose a polarization synchrotron (PS), a new source of electromagnetic radiation based on the emission from a rapidly moving polarization charge in a dielectric. The PS would act as a source of intense, broadband radiation, useful in many spectroscopic and industrial applications. However, in contrast to conventional synchrotrons, the PS would be compact (our prototypes will be 1 m in diameter), require no bending magnets, no vacuum chamber and no cryogens. The use of polarization charge, which is massless, also enables the device to be used to investigate superluminal sources; such sources are thought to be important in astronomical objects such as pulsars. A superluminal source of this type emits with an intensity which falls off as 1/distance, rather than the usual inverse square dependence; this suggests applications in communications and/or radar. The programme involves the design, construction, testing and use of two PSs, PS1 and PS2, as outlined in the objectives section.
