Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this project is to produce a monolithic, hybrid microchip laser using vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and Neodymium Vanadate crystals. The VCSEL will act as an optical pump and will be directly bonded to the Neodymium wafer. The proposed laser will produce diffraction limited, low divergence, Gaussian beam profiles at a wavelength which would be independent of temperature. The device will have a simple electrical drive requiring only a few volts and could be fabricated on a micron scale. An extended range of wavelength operation will be accessed by using different transitions within the Neodymium atom and generating second harmonics of the optical frequency with non-linear crystals. The vertical geometry of the pump laser will also allow the fabrication of microchip laser arrays.
