Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research aims at developing a pilot condition monitoring system that will enable the continuous real-time monitoring of bridge and other structures and provide qualitative information on their health. This will be carried out in three integrated phases which bring together state-of-the-art technologies from two separate disciplines; namely satellite systems and structural simulation methods. The satellite systems inputs will take the form of supplying GPS-based structural deformation information which will be used in the error controlling procedures employed in the development of finite element models derived from the SAFESA Method. SAFESA requires the identification of error sources throughout the structure, its supporting environment, the loading system etc. In the case of large scale structures the influence of geophysical changes are required which are difficult to measure using non-satellite measurement systems. The resulting error controlled FE models will then be linked with optimisation routines to allow the monitoring system to identify structural faults which might emerge during the operation of the structure.
