Summary on Grant Application Form |
The recent development of robust iterative computer techniques for the direct evaluation of limit loads, shakedown limits and related creep solutions provides an opportunity to develop IT system capable of delivering performance indicators for structures subjected to complex histories of load and temperature. Using existing theoretical and computational techniques, which have been implemented in a widely available finite element code, the project will develop methods of inverting the usual analysis methods to produce reliable strength and deformation performance indicators which take into account uncertainties associated with material behaviour and loading history. The methods will be extended to incorporate point-wise failure mechanisms such as crack initiation and creep/fatigue interaction. This will require the development of convergence proofs and implementation methods for the evaluation the effects of residual stress field relaxations in stress concentrations and at positions of high temperature. The work will be carried out with the overall objectives of providing more accurate and flexible systems for life assessment and initial design. The industrial partners will provide direct financial support, expert knowledge and insight into industrial needs.
