Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to develop considerably our ongoing work in contrast-enhanced breast MRI and 3D ultrasound breast imaging to address five major classes of women for whom image guided surgery is currently ineffective:1. Women with scar tissue2. Young women and women taking HRT3. Women with mammographically occult tumours4. Women whose tumour is only visible in one view, and5. Young women presenting with bulky tumours. To this end, we will develop precise quantitative measurements of tumour position and extent. Concurrently, we propose to develop real-time in vivo image measurements that correlate with in vitro immunohistopathological markers of angiogenesis that are predictive of cancer prognosis. This should provide measurements of drug efficacy and tumour growth and support basic oncological research. We propose to demonstrate the results in patient treatments that include surgical guidance.
