Worldwide improvements in MBE and MOVPE techniques have led to the production of II-VI semiconductor material with a quality approaching that of the III-V series, one driving force being the development of blue/green light emitting devices. Full realisation of the opto-electronic potential of II-VI structures depends on a proper understanding of the doping mechanisms, of the effects of strain and of the different growth techniques. The proposal will advance this understanding primarily through the use of resonance magneto-Raman scattering, a technique which enables the electronic structure of different dopant and defect states to be determined and monitored in detail. Because of strong resonance enhancement of the scattering at well-defined excitonic energies, the technique (augmented by standard magneto-optical methods) is highly selective and very sensitive: it is thus ideally suited to the study of epitaxial structure.The work will be inked closely with current EPSRC-supported MBE and MOVPE growth programmes: it will simultaneously take full advantage of our establishment wordwide network of growth teams to provide a unique basis for international comparison of material produced in the UK. The programme is of low cost: specimens will be free, we shall use existing equipment and PDRA and student support are available from other sources.
