Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall goal of this research is to enable the use of a Proactive Design for Assembly (abbreviated to DFA) methodology much earlier in the Product Introduction Process than is current industrial practice. To achieve this, existing DFA methodologies must be modified, adapted and extended and models developed that are capable of describing product designs at an early stage of their elaboration. These techniques will be delivered to designers in a novel, interactive environment (the so-called Sandpit ) which will allow quantitative evaluation of candidate designs at a time when the opportunity for revisions or backtracking is greatest. This will result in the delivery of more competitive product designs with shorter lead times and at lower cost. The project will be carried out by an experienced team working with an existing group of industrial collaborators. These comprise IT companies from both CAD/CAM and DFA areas, with manufacturing companies of varying sizes from a range of industry sectors drawn in either as direct collaborators or by their connection as customers of the IT collaborators.
