Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme is concerned with the process and method adopted by companies to ensure that their products retain a competitive edge. A good deal of recent research has been focused on the business processes that are involved in the design of new products. Clearly the results of this research are valuable in helping companies to establish best practice for new product design. However other research indicates that the companies are less well organised when it comes to updating existing products in order to maintain or grow a competitive edge. Here, research is relatively scarce. The proposed programme would establish differences in approach to incremental product improvement by various companies, attempt to establish the correlation between these approaches and product design effectiveness, and suggest elements of best practice for processes, management, methods and tools.
