Summary on Grant Application Form |
Liquids and solids at high temperatures are of scientific and technological interest for a wide range of disciplines including materials science, statistical physics, structure and bonding, and earth and planetary sciences. We propose to develop a system, using a newly developed aerodynamic levitator and laser heated furnace, for studying the electronic and magnetic properties of such materials using non-invasive methods. The system when finished will be used for fundamental studies of electronic and ionic conduction processes in liquid and solid metals and semiconductors, and also as a method of preparing new glasses, crystalline and ceramic phases and novel metallic alloys from high temperature melts. We will also investigate the properties of magnetic materials as they enter the super-cooled state to study the effects of the magnetic interactions on the nucleation of the solid and the possible existence of ferromagnetism in the liquid state.
