Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research programme would be concerned with exploring the use of a number of methods for producing a low drive energy circuit breaker which does not rely heavily on SF6 as the quenching medium. Such a device would use the electromagnetic energy associated with the fault current and the production and utilisation of ablated or particulate material for embedded cladding material to aid the interruption process. The effectiveness of using an auxiliary arc to generate a gas flow directed towards the main interrupting arc would also be explored. Such a flow may contain suitable ablated or particulate material which should contribute to the interruption process. The assessment of this dual arc interrupter device would be undertaken experimentally suing a synthetic test circuit. The arc would be monitored with a high speed camera and by optical fibre sensors. Such sensors would be used to measure arc movement and position of both the main fault interrupting arc and the auxiliary arc, the pressure rise produced in the cylinder by the auxiliary arc and particulates generated during the interruption process.
