The programme of research will investigate methods to produce hollow fibre membranes from polyetherketone and chemically modified polyetherketones which will be effective in separating mixtures of gases, and which will be superior to current membrane materials in terms of chemical and thermal resistance. Initial experimental work will focus on achieving a coherent membrane structure which will withstand high pressure testing and have the correct morphology for gas separation, and show reproducible results. The effects of changing the spinning parameters such as polymer concentration, air gap, extrusion rate, composition of spinning solution/pore forming additives, precipitation rate (inner and outer coagulant composition and temperature), draw ratio, spinning speed and post spin processing, will subsequently be investigated. The hoolow fibre membranes will be characterised in terms of wall morphology, porosity, mechanical properties and gas transport behaviour (to a range of gas pairs e.g. H2/CH4, CO2/CH4, O2/N2 as well as gas mixtures), enabling an optimisation of the process to be carried out. Recent developments in copolymerisation and chemical modification of polyaryletherketones will be evaluated as hollow fibre membranes and their characterisation will be carried out using morphological studies and gas transport measurements.
