The recent introduction of DELTATHERM (an instrument based on the use of a diode array to measure infra-red emissions in real-time) has opened up new opportunities in thermoelastic measurement. The new technology provides data at an order of magnitude faster and at higher resolution than previous systems such as SPATE. This offers significant new potential in a number of areas of research and three are addressed in this proposal. The proposal includes the purchase of a high specification DELTATHERM system to allow work at the theoretical limit of spatial resolution, so that load paths in the microstructure of metals can be investigated, stress fields at the tips of propagating cracks can be measured and an integrated approach to combined photo-thermo-elasticity can be developed. Pilot studies in all of these areas have been conducted and have demonstrated the potential for advances to be made. The proposal seeks to commission the new instrument and then to establish research projects in each of these three fundamental areas. The proposal has strong industrial collaboration and will contribute to the foresight priorities of optical technology, sensors and sensory information processing, design and systems integration and life cycle analysis.
