Summary on Grant Application Form
This research investigates the development of a virtual environment to support the maintainability assessment of a product on a virtual prototype. This environment will enable the design teams to assess issues such as physical access, part handling and insertion difficulty, mobility of the human body parts around the product, difficulty in removing and replacing parts etc. The main research issues considered in this project are the real-time simulation of physical constraints to enhance the physical realism of the virtual prototype, and the development of an intuitive interface to support natural interaction with the virtual prototype. This research will be focused through a realistic case study (Trent 800 engine). The system development and evaluation will be carried out in collaboration and maintenance engineers and product designers.
